Studies for Children

By participating in a research study, you can help us establish effective treatments and help us learn about the causes and nature of childhood mental health problems.

You may also, depending on the study, receive significant reduction in treatment costs or receive treatment free of charge.

All of our research studies are completely voluntary; you may opt out at any time without penalty.

  • Seeking bilingual fathers of a baby (of up to 7 months) or expecting to participate in a paid research study on bilingual language development

    This is a longitudinal study organized by a team of researchers with the University of Washington and Florida International University. We are interested in learning about the role of fathers in the bilingual language development of  babies. This study can be completed from home and all materials will be sent at no cost to you. 

    Participation will occur across 12-16 months, during which you will access either a language coaching app or an online infant nutrition course. At 4-5 timepoints in that period, you will be asked to: 

    • Complete online questionnaires. 
    • Complete a daylong audio recording.

    You will receive a total of $230 or $260 for full study participation.

    Se buscan padres bilingües de un bebé (de hasta 7 meses) o que estén esperando un bebé para participar en un estudio de investigación pagado sobre el desarrollo del lenguaje bilingüe.

    Esto es un estudio longitudinal organizado por un equipo de University of Washington y Florida International University. Queremos aprender cómo los papás bilingües apoyan el desarrollo del lenguaje bilingüe de sus bebés. Este estudio se realizará desde casa y todos los materiales se le enviarán sin coste alguno para usted. 

    La participación se realizará durante un período de 12 a 16 meses, durante el cual usted tendrá acceso a una aplicación de entrenamiento lingüístico o un curso en línea sobre nutrición infantil. En 4 a 5 momentos durante dicho período, se le solicitará que:

  • Seeking infants 12-18 months-old

    The PANTHERS Project is a remote home-based research project providing support to families with an infant at risk for behavior problems. Our goal is to provide families with strategies and knowledge about early childhood behavior and development. You might be eligible if your child is between 12 months to 18 months, you speak either English or Spanish, and you have concerns about your child’s behavior.   • Seeking Bilingual moms of infants ages 8 to 20 months

    Do you speak Spanish? Do you have a baby between 18 and 20 months old? Would you like to earn $200 for using a new app that can help increase your baby's vocabulary?

    If you meet the above requirements, you may qualify to participate in a research study at Florida International University (FIU).
    -  The study consists of two 30-60 minute sessions, with the use of the app for 2 months.
    - Both sessions are virtual.
    - You will attend Zoom meetings with your baby.
    - A researcher will accompany you in the sessions.

    You'll receive $100 cash for participating at both the start and the end of the study. Will send cash through zelle, venmo or cashapp. The information collected in this study will be kept confidential and secure.

  • Individual Trauma-focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT)  

    Free evidence-based treatment program where youth (ages 3-17) learn healthy ways of coping with their feelings, while caregivers learn stress management, parenting and behavior management skills, and communication skills. As a result, caregivers are better able to manage their own emotional distress and support their child more effectively.   • Seeking families of children 8-10 years old for a research study about social changes and brain development (CASPER)

    Your child’s brain activity will be measured during computer and social tasks. You and your child will complete surveys regarding thoughts and feelings. For completing the 3-hour study protocol, you will receive $100 in compensation, plus $20 for travel expenses. For more details, read the study flyer.

  • Novel Study to Understand how Sleep, Emotions, and Memory are Associated with Anxiety and Worry (Ages 10-13)

    The LEMUR study looks at the role of sleep in processing emotional experiences among children with/without anxiety ages 10-13. We hope that by studying the impact of sleep on emotional experiences, we can learn more about child anxiety. Participating children do not need to have a problem with sleep to participate. Study visits would take place 3 times over the course of 3 years, with 18 months in between each study visit. All participants will be compensated $1500 total ($500/visit) for completing all parts of the study.

    We are recruiting typically developing infants and children (3 months through 9 years of age) for our exciting study establishing the basic building blocks of social, cognitive, and language development.

    • Two or more virtual Zoom 1-hour visits to fit your schedule

    • You will receive $40 -$90 for your time and effort

  • Novel Study Seeking to Identify Sleep Patterns that Predict Emotional Health Problems Among Youth Engaged in Primary Care

    The SleepLife study is recruiting children and teens aged 10 to 13 years who have been in primary care at Nicklaus Children's Hospital for the last year. Participating youth do not need to have a sleep problem to take part in the study. The long-term goal of the SleepLife study is to develop tools that help providers, families, and teens identify and treat sleep patterns that relate to the future of their emotional health and wellness. Study visits can be completed remotely or in person at Nicklaus Children's Hospital and take place over the course of 3 years. Participants will be compensated up to $1,675 over the three years for their time.
