Summer Treatment Program PreK

The Summer Treatment Program for Pre-Kindergarteners (STP-PreK) is a comprehensive school readiness program for children entering kindergarten with behavioral, emotional and learning problems.

Program Goals

The STP-PreK is based on the nationally acclaimed Summer Treatment Program (STP) for elementary-aged children. We equip students with:

  • Problem-solving and social skills to improve friendships
  • Academic skills to succeed in kindergarten
  • Ability to focus and follow classroom rules and routines
  • Emotional functioning, self-control skills and self-esteem
  • Positive attitude towards learning and school
  • Independent organizational and self-control skills
  • Teamwork, good sportsmanship, and basic collaborative skills
  • Treatment

Treatment includes individually adapted reward and response-cost programs aimed at improving behavior, academic performance and social skills. Treatment plans and strategies are continuously monitored and modified as necessary.

  • Parent Training Groups

Parents form an integral part of STP Pre-K by participating in weekly group evening sessions. Parent sessions are designed to help parents develop skills to reduce problem behaviors, to improve their child's task skills and relationships with parents and peers, and to maintain and extend the gains made in the STP Pre-K to the child's natural at-home environment and kindergarten classrooms.

  • Eligibility & Fees

Children entering kindergarten are eligible. Enrollment is limited, and participants are selected based on an evaluation conducted by program staff. Recent testing from other sources may be helpful in supplementing the intake process. Children will be evaluated for ADHD, oppositional disorders, aggression, learning problems. Referrals can be made by school personnel, mental health professionals, physicians, or parents.

The STP-PreK is currently funded by the Children's Trust. During the application and screening process, each parent has an opportunity to meet with a representative from the Center for Children and Families, who can answer questions concerning financial aspects associated with the STP.
