What is the deadline for submitting application materials?
There is no cutoff date for submitting application materials. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis beginning in October and continuing through the spring. For the best chance of being selected for an interview, applicants should apply as early as possible. Applications received after all positions have been filled will be placed on a waiting list. Applicants on the waiting list will be contacted if a position becomes available at a later date.
Who should write my letters of recommendation?
You should request letters of recommendation from people who know you well and can speak about your skills in relation to the position for which you are applying. Your letters may be academic, professional, or personal in nature.
You should request letters of recommendation from professors and teaching assistants who know you well. If you have worked in a research lab, you should consider requesting a letter from your research supervisor.
If you have worked with children in a school setting, summer camp, after-school program or sports/recreation program, you should consider asking your supervisor at that program to submit a recommendation in support of your application. If you played on a sports team, you should consider asking your coach to submit a letter in support of your application. Coaches may be able to write about teamwork, leadership, and your ability to work under pressure in ways that other recommenders may not.
You may submit personal letters of recommendation from people who know you well and can describe your strengths and skills. However, given the competitive nature of the application process, we recommend that some of your letters are academic or professional in nature.
May I submit more than 3 letters of recommendation?
Yes, you may submit more than 3 letters of recommendation in support of your application. The three recommenders you listed on your application forms will receive direct links to upload their letters. You may tell any additional recommenders to send their letters directly via email to firstname.lastname@example.org.
One of the recommenders that I listed on my application is not available. How can I substitute a letter from a different recommender?
If you need to submit a letter from a different recommender, contact us at email@example.com to inform us of the substitution. The new recommender should send your letter of recommendation to the firstname.lastname@example.org email account.
If you expect that one of your recommendations will be delayed significantly (e.g., professor on leave for the term), you should consider requesting a letter from an additional recommender so that your application packet can be completed in a timely manner.
May I submit an Unofficial Transcript or Student Grade Report?
You must submit your official college transcripts in order for your application packet to be considered complete. Official transcripts should be submitted via your school’s Registrar’s Office or transcript service. If you expect a delay in the processing of your official transcript, you may submit an unofficial transcript or grade report in support of your application. However, you will need to submit your official transcript when it becomes available.
How can I list more than 2 position choices?
The application form allows applicants to list a first choice and second choice position. However, all applications will be considered for all available positions. That is an applicant who listed Research Assistant as her first choice and Classroom Aide as her second choice may be considered for a Counselor position if she has skills and experience relevant to the Counselor position. Similarly, an applicant who lists Elementary program positions as top choices could be considered for a position in the PreK Program if he has experience that is relevant to the PreK Program positions.
How soon after I submit my application will I be notified if I am selected for an interview?
After you submit your application form, you must ensure that your letters of recommendation and transcripts are submitted in a timely manner in order to make your application packet complete. Completed application packets are reviewed on a rolling basis. Applicants who are selected for interviews will be notified after their applications have been reviewed. We typically conduct interviews November through late March or early April. If positions are still available later, we will continue interviewing until all positions are filled.
Applicants living outside the Miami area may interview by Skype/FaceTime or by telephone.
Are International Students allowed to participate?
At this time, we are not able to sponsor visa applications for students who wish to travel to the United States in order to work in the program. However, International students currently studying in the United States on an F-1 Visa may be able eligible to participate in the STP if their current college or university is able to approve their participation as Optional Practical Training (OPT) or Curricular Practical Training (CPT). Contact your international student services office to inquire about an authorization for the OPT/CPT options. Where will the program take place?
The Summer Treatment Program will be held at Paul Bell Middle School, 11800 NW 2nd Street, Miami FL 33182, approximately 1.9 miles from the main entrance of the FIU Modesto Maidique Campus (11200 SW 8th Street, Miami FL 33199). Please do not contact Paul Bell Middle School with questions regarding the STP.
Some staff training activities will take place on the Modesto Maidique Campus (MMC).
If I am selected to participate in the program, where will I live?
Participants are responsible for making their own housing arrangements. Each summer, there are many STP staff members from outside the Miami area who are interested in finding roommates and sharing housing. Once accepted to a position, staff members will have the opportunity to join a social media group to meet and communicate with other staff members to make housing and carpool arrangements.
